Our Bristol Practice
Skin Cancer Excision

What is Skin Cancer Excision?

Skin cancer excision is a surgical procedure to remove cancerous skin tissue. This treatment is crucial to prevent the cancer from spreading and to promote healing. Our experienced clinicians use precise techniques to ensure effective removal while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue whenever possible.

When is Skin Cancer Excision Needed?

Excision is recommended when a skin biopsy confirms the presence of malignant (cancerous) cells. Common types of skin cancers include:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form, typically slow-growing and often found on sun-exposed areas.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): May grow more quickly and can spread if left untreated.
  • Melanoma: Less common but more aggressive, requiring prompt attention.

If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer, timely treatment is essential.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your comfort and care are our priority. The procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. Consultation and Assessment: We begin with a thorough consultation to assess your condition and discuss your treatment plan.
  2. Local Anaesthesia: To ensure a pain-free experience, the treatment area is numbed with a local anaesthetic.
  3. Surgical Removal: The cancerous tissue is carefully excised, and we aim to remove all cancer cells while minimizing the impact on healthy tissue.
  4. Closure and Aftercare: The site is then closed with sutures if necessary, and we provide clear aftercare instructions to support your healing.

Recovery and Aftercare

Following the procedure, most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days. We provide personalised aftercare guidance, including how to care for your wound, minimize scarring, and monitor for any signs of recurrence.
