There are more reasons than just aesthetic appeal for correcting crooked, crowded or protruding teeth — they also carry greater risks to oral health. For example, teeth that are crowded and overlapping are difficult (if not impossible) to clean properly and are at increased risk of decay. Further, protruding front teeth are at greater risk of accidental damage, as well as potentially causing problems with speech (and kissing).

The way that your teeth fit together when you bite is important too. If the upper and lower jaw fit together poorly (malocclusion) then this can cause stress to your temporomandibular joint, potentially causing pain and headaches.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontic treatment uses appliances to straighten teeth and gradually move them into more ideal positions over time. As well as greatly improving aesthetic appeal, orthodontic corrections improve the evenness and function of your bite and reduce your risk of undesirable problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Children and adults can be treated with orthodontics, indeed, it’s easier to correct aspects of the bite at a young age than it is years down the line. Early interventions are also used to correct severe problems with the way the jaw fits together, usually during adolescence.

Orthodontics at The Bristol Dental Practice

Our consultant orthodontist, Mr Scott Deacon, has the skill and experience to diagnose and treat all orthodontic problems in patients of all ages. Mr Deacon has completed 15 years of training to become a consultant orthodontist and has been practising in orthodontics for 14 years. He is currently the Clinical Director of the NHS South West Cleft Service UK, a specialist surgical team that looks after children born with a cleft lip and/or palate.

Orthodontics at The Bristol Dental Practice

  • Specialist orthodontics: we have a consultant orthodontist as an integral part of our permanent team
  • Adult orthodontics: orthodontic treatment for adult patients including lingual braces
  • Children’s orthodontics: orthodontic treatment for young patients including early assessment and treatment options such as ceramic braces and Invisalign for kids
  • Fixed metal braces: the traditional option of fixed brackets attached to the front of the teeth. Still widely used due to their unrivalled ability to produce predictable, beautiful results
  • Ceramic braces: a more discreet variation of fixed metal braces that uses tooth-coloured ceramic brackets
  • Lingual braces: fixed metal braces attached to the rear of the teeth for a far more discreet effect
  • Invisalign: bespoke clear plastic removable appliances. Our consultant orthodontist Mr Deacon is especially skilled in correcting orthodontic issues with Invisalign
  • Inman Aligner invisible braces: clear appliances specially designed for straightening front teeth quickly and simply
  • Clear Smile invisible braces: clear removable appliances, similar to Invisalign

After your treatment, you will need to wear a retainer to ensure your teeth do not move back to their original positions. In some cases, a bonded retainer (a non-removable wire affixed to the back of your teeth) may be recommended.
