In the event of any of the following emergencies, you should make an appointment to come and see us as soon as you can. In the meantime, follow this advice:

  • Pain, bleeding or swelling following a dental procedure: anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen can help. If the pain and/or swelling is severe, attend a hospital A&E department straight away
  • Bleeding gums: rinsing with warm water and salt may help
  • Broken or chipped tooth: try to keep the tooth as clean as possible. If you have any pain, then anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen should help
  • Broken filling or crown: if you have the filling or crown, keep it safe and bring it to the practice with you at your appointment. In some instances, it may be possible to re-bond your crown if the underlying tooth is still sound and has not suffered any decay
  • Broken or lost veneer: likewise, if you have the veneer, keep it safe and bring it with you to your appointment

In the event of the following emergencies, you need to seek immediate dental or medical attention:

  • Severe pain not eased by painkillers and/or persistent bleeding: go straight to a hospital A&E department
  • Tooth knocked out: you need to see an emergency dentist as soon as possible, ideally within one hour of the incident. Try to touch the tooth as little as possible and do not clean it. Place the tooth in a Tupperware box (with lid) filled with some milk until you can see the emergency dentist
