Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are a discreet style of fixed metal braces that use tooth coloured ceramic blocks on the front of the teeth instead of stainless steel, and white wires and clear ligatures, which are used to attach the wire to the blocks.

Benefits of ceramic braces at
The Bristol Dental Practice

  • they are almost invisible
  • they are custom made, optimised to work for the patient’s needs
  • they are designed and fit by a consultant specialist orthodontist
  • a specialist orthodontist provides a lengthy assessment and in depth diagnosis to create a stable and predictably perfect outcome
  • they are suitable for complex multi-disciplinary treatments

Are ceramic braces suitable for everybody?

It’s helpful to think of them as an adult version of a teen brace: they provide all the versatility and reliability of fixed braces but are less obvious, thereby helping adult patients feel comfortable enough wearing them to begin what can be a life changing course of treatment that they might have been putting off for years. Having said that, ceramic braces are also available for children at The Bristol Dental Practice.

When are ceramic braces effective?

Ceramic braces are safe and predictable enough to be suitable to facilitate a wide range of tooth movements. Ceramic blocks are more expensive than traditional stainless steel versions but the benefits they offer in terms of a reduction in the visual presence of the appliance are substantial. Not only do they work as efficiently as traditional fixed metal braces, they offer a greater degree of flexibility than other discreet treatments such as Invisalign because a specialist orthodontist can alter the course of treatment after it has started should any unexpected factors emerge.

How do ceramic braces work?

Ceramic blocks glued to the teeth contain programming that determines the position of each tooth. The wire responds to the programming by pulling the teeth into position. Treatment ranges from six to 24 months.

Ceramic braces by a specialist orthodontist

Orthodontic patients at The Bristol Dental Practice are treated Mr Scott Deacon, a consultant specialist orthodontist with two decades of experience. He has personally treated more than 5,000 patients and advises other dentists on complex multi-disciplinary cases, as well as training dentists to become specialist orthodontists. Mr Deacon has been interviewed as a dental expert on The Gadget Show on Channel 5, Sky News and BBC News.

What happens in a consultation for ceramic braces?

The clinician will assess if the patient is suitable in a lengthy appointment, taking digital photographs and radiographs and having a discussion about what the patient aims to achieve with their smile. If treatment is agreed the patient will be invited back to have the appliance fitted and then tightened every six to eight weeks.
