Invisalign

Invisalign

Invisalign is a removeable teeth straightening system that uses clear aligners shaped to fit the gum line to exert pressure on the teeth instead of metal braces. It has become increasingly popular over the past decade among patients who were worried about feeling self-conscious about being seen with conspicuous orthodontic appliances.

Benefits of Invisalign at
The Bristol Dental Practice

  • comfortable and easy to remove for eating
  • aesthetically discreet, enabling self-conscious patients to access treatment
  • patients are assessed for all potential options by a specialist orthodontist
  • general dentists may only offer Invisalign, lacking choice and diagnostic capability

Is Invisalign suitable for everybody?

It is suitable for most people, although it is not always suitable for complex cases, and it is limited in multi-disciplinary cases. An advantage of being treated by a specialist orthodontist is that they are skilled in providing in depth diagnoses and using a range of orthodontic systems. They will therefore be able to assess whether the patient’s issue with their bite, spacing or overcrowding can be effectively treated with Invisalign.

Safer with a specialist orthodontist

This approach differs from many general dentists who offer Invisalign but rely solely on its diagnostic software and offer no alternative systems. So, while it may be possible to use Invisalign in a certain case, it may not necessarily be the best option for the patient. Only a specialist orthodontist will be able to make the appropriate recommendation.

How does Invisalign work?

A series of discreet clear aligners, which can be easily removed for eating and to clean, are worn by the patient and changed about every two weeks. The successive changes in aligners place incremental pressure on the teeth, which are gently pushed into position. Because the patient can be given many aligners in one visit they are not required to have as many appointments as with other systems — one every eight to 12 weeks is usually fine, unless the patient needs closer monitoring. Treatment last between six and 24 months.

The Invisalign app

Patients can track their progress with the My Invisalign Smile app, which offers support and guidance that’s synced to treatment, and enables patients to share their smile story on social media.

What happens during a consultation?

In a lengthy assessment one of our specialist orthodontists will take digital photographs and x-rays and then evaluate the suitable options. If Invisalign is chosen, they then send the clinical information to Invisalign, order the aligners and call the patient back for a further appointment to demonstrate how to use them.

Do Invisalign aligners need special cleaning?

They are removeable and are only worn for two weeks at a time, so cleaning is less of an issue than with other orthodontic appliances.
