Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is a chronic, often painful condition characterised by a persistent burning or tingling sensation. This can affect various areas, including the tongue, gums, inner cheeks, throat, and the central or back parts of the mouth. Some individuals experience dryness, a bitter or metallic taste, and if untreated, BMS symptoms can lead to secondary effects like sleep disturbances and depression.
Symptoms can vary widely among those affected. Some people experience mild discomfort upon waking that intensifies throughout the day, while others may have constant pain or intermittent bouts. BMS can affect both men and women but is most prevalent in women, especially around or after menopause.
