Mr Scott Deacon
Consultant Orthodontist (GDC No: 73099)
Scott was appointed as the Lead Consultant Orthodontist for NHS South West Cleft Service UK in 2005 and is currently the Clinical Director of this specialist service. Scott has worked in private practice undertaking orthodontic treatment since 2005 in the Bristol area.
Scott has a particular interest in aesthetics as he works with plastic and facial surgeons and in providing treatment with lingual appliances which fit on the inside of the teeth.
Scott was previously Training Programme Director for Orthodontics in the South West and Course Director of the Doctorate in Dental Surgery Programme at the University of Bristol which trains orthodontists. He lectures in his specialist areas to many different kinds of professionals including surgeons, dentists, specialist orthodontists, dental therapists, nurses, hygienists and undergraduate dentists.
He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol and has been an examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians Glasgow, the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, the University of Bristol and the University of Cardiff.
For more than 10 years Scott has been Clinical Project Lead for the CRANE Database at the Royal College of Surgeons England, based in London. This is a national register of all babies born with cleft lips and palates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which assesses the quality of treatment these children receive in the specialist centres.
He has published in international journals on topics ranging from toothbrushes to outcomes in cleft treatment, co-authoring chapters for textbooks on cleft care. He has previously been an Editor for the Oral Health Group of the Cochrane Collaboration and a Clinical Sub-Editor for the Journal of Orthodontics.
Scott has undertaken media work on TV with the BBC, Gadget Show, Channel 5, Sky and has been interviewed on national and local radio and for the national press. Outside work Scott is a keen skier and Bristol Rugby fan.
