Oral & Facial Cancer

Understanding Oral & Facial Cancer: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Cancers of the mouth and face are common and can arise in different forms, with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) the most common form often seen in the soft tissue lining inside the mouth, which covers the gums, inner cheeks, lip, gum, the floor and roof of the mouth and increasingly in the tongue. Rarer conditions can also arise in the salivary glands, or lymph glands, or in bone, muscle and other tissue.

There is greater variation on the face itself, as this is an area of skin most often exposed to the sun. Conditions can range from actinic keratosis, a precancerous condition, through to more serious melanoma.

The key to successful treatment for all oral, or facial cancers is swift action and accurate diagnosis in the early stages.

What are the symptoms of mouth cancer?

The main symptom of oral cancer is leukoplakia, which appear as thick white patches on the inside surfaces of the mouth. There is no pain initially but as it spreads it can become painful. Other symptoms of mouth cancer include:

  • Sore mouth ulcers that don’t heal within a few weeks.
  • White or red patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue.
  • Unexplained lumps in the mouth that don’t heal.
  • Unexplained numbness and / or strange sensations on the lips and tongue.
  • Unexplained loose teeth.

What are the symptoms of skin cancer?

Skin cancers can look very different and the symptoms can vary.  We recommend you pay special attention to:

  • A sore that doesn’t heal.  Particularly, if it looks unusual, hurts, is itchy, bleeds, crusts or scabs for more than 4 weeks.
  • A sore that appears translucent, shiny and pink, pearly white or red. It may also feel rough and have raised edges.
  • Any small lumps that might be slow growing, shiny and pink or red.
  • Red patches on your skin that may also be itchy.
  • Changes to freckles or moles can be a sign of another type of skin cancer called melanoma.

Diagnosing Oral & Facial Cancers

At The Bristol Dental Practice our experienced Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Mr Collin will perform a comprehensive examination, including a review of your personal medical history. Using our advanced imaging and microscopic evaluation technology, we aim to achieve an accurate diagnosis. If further information is necessary for a precise diagnosis, a biopsy may be recommended.

Beyond the visible areas of your mouth and face, we carefully evaluate deeper tissues to understand the extent of any cancer present, ensuring we create an effective and personalised treatment plan for you.

Treatment Options for Oral & Facial Cancers

Treatment for oral and facial cancers may involve radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or targeted biological treatments, although surgery remains one of the most effective options. The specific approach depends on the type and stage of cancer, along with your overall health and personal needs.

With a focus on both treatment efficacy and aesthetic considerations, we will ensure that all procedures align with your needs. At our Bristol specialist dental practice, we adopt a supportive approach, combining your preferences with medical expertise to achieve the best outcomes with minimal intervention.
