Trigeminal Nerve Disorder

Understanding Trigeminal Nerve Disorder: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Trigeminal Nerve Disorder (TND) affects approximately 1 in 10,000 people annually, causing sharp, shock-like facial pain that can be intense and debilitating. TND may be triggered by everyday activities like eating, drinking, smiling, or even simple facial movements. In some cases, pain can arise spontaneously without any apparent trigger.

TND is more common with age but can occur at any time, typically affecting one side of the face but occasionally both sides, including the jaw, eyes, or forehead. The trigeminal nerve which transmits facial sensations to the brain, can malfunction, leading to sudden bouts of pain that vary in duration and intensity. Due to the unpredictable nature of this condition, seeking specialised care is essential.

Diagnosing Trigeminal Nerve Disorder

An accurate diagnosis of TND requires the expertise of our experienced Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon, Mr Collin. During your consultation, he will thoroughly review your symptoms to distinguish TND from other conditions, such as jaw joint disorders or broader nerve issues. Reflex tests may help identify nerve compression, and a CT scan may reveal areas where the nerve is under pressure, often from blood vessels or, in rare cases, tumours or physical trauma.

Damage to the nerve’s protective myelin sheath is another possible cause of TND. Multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions can contribute to this damage, although in most cases, TND is independent of other health conditions.

Treatment Options for Trigeminal Nerve Disorder

TND is a complex condition, and detailed diagnostic testing enables us to select the most effective treatment options for you.

Medication-Based Treatment

  • Anticonvulsant medications: Often effective in reducing nerve pain by limiting electrical impulses and preventing pain signals from reaching the brain.
  • Antispasmodic medications: May help reduce muscle tension, sometimes in combination with anticonvulsants, to relieve pain.

Surgical Options

If medications are ineffective or symptoms worsen, surgical procedures may be considered:

  • Nerve-modifying procedures: Certain approaches aim to damage specific nerve fibres to reduce pain. These procedures can provide relief, though they may cause some numbness or tingling in the area.
  • Microvascular decompression: A procedure that relieves pressure on the trigeminal nerve caused by nearby blood vessels. Although effective, this is a significant surgery requiring specialised care.
