Jaw Cysts & Tumours

Understanding Oral Cysts & Tumours: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

The mouth and jaw are particularly susceptible to cysts and tumours and most people will experience some form of growth in their mouth or on their jaw over their lifetime, ranging from benign cysts to more severe jaw tumours.

While factors like oral hygiene, alcohol, and tobacco use play a role, genetic predispositions, such as Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, can also influence the likelihood of growths developing. Cancerous tumours, such as squamous cell carcinoma, require urgent attention, while even non-cancerous growths can become aggressive and potentially cancerous. Early symptoms of oral tumours may include red or white patches in the mouth, persistent sores, or subtle changes like tissue thickening, swallowing difficulties, or chronic sore throat.

If you notice any of these symptoms seek prompt evaluation to ensure proper diagnosis, effective treatment, and optimal health outcomes.

Types of Cysts and Tumours

Growths within the jaw or surrounding facial tissue can take two primary forms: tumours and cysts. A tumour is an abnormal mass of tissue, while a cyst is a fluid-filled lesion.

Growths are typically categorised as odontogenic (arising from tooth-forming cells or tissues) or non-odontogenic (originating from other oral tissues). Odontogenic cysts and tumours are linked to tooth development, whereas non-odontogenic types form in oral tissues unrelated to teeth.

The jawbones—the mandible and maxilla—are particularly prone to cyst development, with potential causes including habits like lip biting, smoking, trauma, or blocked saliva glands, which can encourage cyst formation.

Oral tumours can develop due to various genetic or cellular factors. Some tumours are benign, while others are cancerous or metastatic, spreading from other areas of the body.

Regardless of type, any growth in the mouth should be promptly evaluated, as some can be aggressive, damaging surrounding bone, tissue, or even displacing teeth.

Common Types of Jaw and Oral Growths

While there are numerous types of cysts and tumours, these are among the most common:

Radicular Cysts: The most common type, typically forming in response to tissue death within the dental pulp.

Dentigerous Cysts: Often found around the crown of an unerupted tooth.

Odontomas: Tumours composed of dental tissue that can resemble a tooth, often obstructing normal growth.

Ameloblastoma: A non-cancerous tumour near the molars, known for its invasive nature and potential for damage.

Granulomas (Giant Cell Granulomas): Fast-growing, painful, and capable of destroying surrounding bone.

Keratocysts: Behaves like an odontogenic tumour and may regrow if not entirely removed.

Gingival Cysts: Usually benign, small, and asymptomatic, they may not require treatment if they do not interfere with oral function but can be surgically removed if uncomfortable, or cosmetically concerning.

Other less common types include calcifying, ossifying, and glandular cysts, as well as those linked to squamous cell carcinoma. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment are crucial to prevent further complications.
