Frenectomy Procedures

When a frenum is too thick or too short, it can restrict movement and potentially cause a variety of oral health issues. A frenectomy helps resolve these issues by surgically removing or reducing the frenum, allowing for better function and comfort. There are several reasons why a frenectomy may be recommended by your dentist:

• Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia): When the lingual frenum is too short or thick, it restricts tongue movement, affecting speech, swallowing, and even breastfeeding in infants.
• Lip-Tie: When the labial frenum is too tight, it can cause spacing between the upper front teeth, affect lip movement, or make it difficult to close the lips properly.
• Speech and Feeding Problems: Restricted frenum can lead to difficulties in speech development and feeding issues, particularly in young children.
• Orthodontic Issues: A tight frenum can create gaps between the teeth, which may interfere with orthodontic treatment or cause relapse after treatment.

It’s important to be diagnosed by a specialist oral surgeon as not all symptoms can be seen with the naked eye, for example, some tongues which appear to be normal; can suffer from limited range of motion.

A frenectomy is a relatively straightforward oral surgery procedure. Depending on the complexity and patient needs, it may be performed as follows:

• Traditional Surgical Method: Involves the use of a scalpel to remove the frenum. Local anaesthesia is typically used to ensure a pain-free experience.
• Electrosurgery Method: This method uses heat generated by an electric current to cut the frenum. This technique is performed under local anaesthesia, resulting in minimal post-operative discomfort. As the tip of the electrosurgery unit cuts, it simultaneously cauterises the tissue to stop any bleeding, making it a very efficient option for frenectomy procedures.

Each method is safe, with minimal discomfort and a quick recovery time.  Most patients recover quickly, with full healing occurring within a few days. A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled post surgery to ensure optimal healing.
