If you’ve been living with missing teeth, or struggling with dentures that don’t feel quite right, you’ve probably wondered whether there’s a better option. Today, dental implants are the gold standard in care, looking, feeling, and acting exactly like a natural tooth. But, if you’re in your sixties, seventies, or beyond, you may be unsure whether that option is still available to you.
Age isn’t the deciding factor
The good news is that age isn’t necessarily a barrier. Dental implants work by placing a small titanium screw into the jawbone, which fuses with the bone over time to create a stable, permanent foundation for a replacement tooth. This process – known as osseointegration – works the same way in older patients as it does in younger ones.
This means that whether you’ve recently lost a tooth, or it’s been missing for years, implants can offer a life-changing improvement. Not just to your smile, but also to your overall quality of life. You’ll find that eating becomes easier (and more enjoyable), your speech is more natural, and you can finally wave goodbye to the self-consciousness that comes with gaps or ill-fitting dentures.
The risks of leaving a missing tooth
Leaving a missing tooth isn’t just a cosmetic concern; it can also have knock-on effects on your overall health. Over time, the jawbone beneath a gap begins to deteriorate through lack of stimulation – a process known as bone resorption. There’s also a growing body of research linking tooth loss and poor oral health to wider systemic health issues, including cardiovascular disease.
Dental implants, by contrast, actively stimulate the jawbone, helping to preserve its structure and your facial profile for the long term. In this sense, treatment isn’t just about how you look: it’s an investment in your long-term health.
When age calls for extra care
As we’ve said above, seeking treatment as an older patient is perfectly possible (and something we’d always encourage). But, in some cases, age can mean that we need to proceed more carefully – or build in extra steps to make sure the foundation for your implants is secure.
Conditions like osteoporosis and diabetes, or taking certain medications, can affect bone density or healing. If this affects you, we’ll need to take a closer look at your situation before planning your treatment. To do this, we’ll carry out a 3D X-ray of your jaw, which will allow us to see how much bone is present. For the best results, we might recommend preparatory treatments, such as a bone graft, before we proceed. This might also apply if a tooth, or multiple teeth, have been missing for a while.
None of this is a reason to rule implants out. It simply means that the right preparation makes all the difference, and that your treatment plan will be tailored specifically to you.
If you have multiple missing teeth
If you’re missing several teeth, implants are still an excellent solution. Depending on where your gaps are, we can fit multiple implants, either singly or in support of a dental bridge. To replace a full arch, we adopt a technique known as All on 4, which allows us to fit a complete set of permanent teeth using just four strategically placed implants. Or, if you’re currently wearing conventional dentures, we can explore the option of implant-secured dentures, which are more firmly fixed in place.
Whichever is best, the impact is often immediate. We regularly see how transformative these treatments are for patients who have been relying on dentures; offering a level of stability and comfort that removable options can’t match.
