Many people who have tolerated crooked teeth for years worry they’re “too old” to do anything to correct them. If you didn’t have braces as a child or teenager, you might think it’s not possible to have them now. But thankfully, this is a complete myth (just like many other apparent obstacles). Being older doesn’t mean you can’t have your teeth straightened – and in fact, it’s often only when we mature that we have the time, budget, and decisiveness needed to fix that niggling problem.
In this article, we’ll de-bunk some of the biggest myths holding people back from the self-confidence of straightened teeth.
Myth #1: I’m too old for braces
Braces are typically associated with adolescence, as adult teeth emerge and find their place in the mouth. But this doesn’t mean they can only be fitted to younger patients. In recent years, there’s been a significant increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment.
Many people assume treatment will be more difficult because of their age, but this needn’t be the case. While planning treatment, we do take existing dental work into account – but our specialist orthodontists routinely treat adult patients and can tailor your plan to your individual needs.
Myth #2: They’ll affect my appearance
When you imagine “braces”, you may well visualise the traditional fixed metal format. These are still available, and for some people they’re a proven and predictable choice. However, if you’re put off by the appearance of braces – especially if you regularly socialise professionally or personally – it helps to know that today, there are many other options.
For instance, ceramic braces are a more discreet variant of metal braces, using ceramic blocks, white wires, and clear ligatures, which more effectively blend in with your natural tooth colour. Or, if you’re more comfortable with something completely inconspicuous, we offer invisible braces and straightening systems, including Invisalign, Clear Smile, and Inman Aligners. If you’re unsure which is best, we can talk through the system that’s likely to work well for you.
Myth #3: Teeth straightening takes too long
Worried you’ll be wearing braces for years? While treatment times vary, many orthodontic cases can be completed within 12 to 24 months, and some minor corrections may be achieved in even less time. Inman Aligners, for instance, can take as little as six to 16 weeks for patients who have crowded or protruding front teeth.
You may also find that because modern solutions are so discreet, wearing an aligner or braces feels less intrusive than expected. Some options don’t need to be permanently fixed in your mouth, and can therefore be removed while you eat. This means your lifestyle won’t have to change in any major way to accommodate your treatment.
Myth #4: They’re only for cosmetic reasons
People often seek braces for cosmetic reasons – and undeniably, straight teeth provide a real confidence boost – but it can also be to correct issues with their bite or jaw tension. If your teeth are misaligned, having them straightened as an adult will help to preserve your longer-term oral health; something that’s especially important as you age.
Misaligned teeth can cause a range of undesirable knock-on effects, including trouble chewing your food, difficulties with brushing and flossing, and even tooth decay. Some people notice that their bite causes jaw tension, which in turn causes headaches. There are many non-cosmetic reasons for having your teeth straightened.
Myth #5: I can’t afford teeth straightening
You might assume that orthodontic treatment is too expensive for you to seriously consider. But often, it’s more accessible than people think. At The Bristol Dental Practice, we’re entirely up-front about our costs, making it easier to plan and budget for any dental treatments you choose to book in.
And, if you’d like to explore the option of teeth straightening, it might also help to know that our patients can access 0% finance. If you’re approved, this means you can spread the cost of your treatment, rather than paying an entire amount up-front.
Imagining a straighter smile?
Orthodontic treatment isn’t only about appearance. Feeling confident in your smile can have a positive impact on your social life, professional confidence and overall wellbeing – while also supporting better oral health.
