Get the help you need
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, it’s important to act quickly. In any of the following situations, you should contact us to arrange an urgent appointment as soon as you can. In the meantime, there are steps you can take to manage the situation until you get to the practice.
Pain, bleeding, or swelling after a dental procedure
Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen can help bring down discomfort and swelling.
But: If the pain or swelling becomes severe, or if there is significant bleeding, go straight to your nearest hospital A&E department.
Bleeding gums
This can be a sign of gum disease or inflammation. Rinsing your mouth gently with warm salt water can help soothe the area and reduce bacteria.
Broken or chipped tooth
Try to keep the area clean and avoid biting down on hard foods. If you’re in pain, ibuprofen can offer relief until you’re seen by a dentist.
Broken filling or crown
If you still have the filling or crown, keep it safe and bring it along to your appointment. If the tooth underneath is healthy, there’s a chance we can reattach it.
Broken or lost veneer
Hold onto the veneer if you have it and bring it with you to the practice. In some cases, it may be possible to re-bond it, depending on the condition of the tooth underneath.
When to seek immediate dental or medical help
It’s rare, but some dental emergencies require urgent medical attention. If you’re experiencing severe pain that isn’t helped by over-the-counter medication, or bleeding that won’t stop, you should act straight away. Go directly to A&E without delay.
