Facial Pain

Understanding Facial Pain: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Facial pain is unique to each individual, requiring a customised approach to diagnosis and treatment. A complete range of expertise is crucial for effective care, and many patients may be referred to us by their dentist.

While each may offer valuable insight, treating facial pain involves addressing a highly complex part of the body, where a comprehensive, integrated view can often lead to the best outcomes.

At our Bristol dental practice, you’ll see an experienced Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with expertise across multiple disciplines, focused on fully understanding your condition to find an effective solution.

Whenever possible, we aim to relieve mild facial pain through non-invasive therapies, but should surgery or other interventions be needed, our approach prioritises minimising such procedures.

Common Causes of Facial Pain

While each case is unique, several conditions are frequently associated with facial pain. Dental issues are often a primary cause, especially for short-term pain. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and other jaw conditions are common and can extend pain beyond the jaw itself. Trigeminal Nerve Disorder, involving inflammation of the trigeminal nerve, is another prevalent condition, known for its intense, shock-like facial pain.

Other potential causes include blocked or underperforming salivary glands, burning mouth syndrome, or even vascular conditions like giant cell arteritis. Oral cysts and tumours can also contribute to facial pain. Where symptoms suggest a serious underlying cause, prompt investigation is essential.

Diagnosing Facial Pain

Understanding the history and details of your facial pain is essential for accurate diagnosis. During a consultation we will explore factors such as the timing, duration, location, and intensity of the pain, as well as any triggers or relieving factors. We’ll also take into account other symptoms and relevant medical or family history, as jaw disorders, for example, can be hereditary.

The physical examination is a key part of diagnosis, including assessments of head, neck, and jaw muscle movements, identifying any tenderness, colour changes, or growths. Advanced imaging—like X-rays and CT scans—and lab tests may be used to gain further insight.

Each piece of evidence contributes to our understanding, providing a detailed look into the complex craniofacial area where many potential conditions can arise.
