Oral Lichen Planus

Understanding Oral Lichen Planus: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the mucous membranes in your mouth, causing white patches, red swollen areas, or even open sores on the inner cheeks, gums, or tongue. This can lead to sensitivity to spicy or acidic foods, or a persistent burning sensation. Other symptoms include inflamed or bleeding gums, a thickened tongue, and discomfort that may make speaking or eating difficult.

These symptoms can also lead to stress, depression, weight loss and nutrient deficiencies, and may increase the risk of oral cancer.

Diagnosing Oral Lichen Planus

There is no single cause for oral lichen planus, and it is not contagious or hereditary. The condition results from an immune system response, with inflammation-causing white blood cells becoming activated. Triggers, however, can vary widely, from medications and mouth injuries to infections or allergic reactions to dental materials. Although stress can exacerbate the condition, it can also act as a trigger.

Our Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Mr Collin will assess your unique case with a thorough understanding of oral lichen planus. Your diagnosis may involve a physical examination, medical history review, and a discussion of your symptoms and concerns. Subtle variations in symptoms can provide essential clues, and additional testing may include blood tests, allergy screenings, or a biopsy.

Treatment Options for Oral Lichen Planus

If a specific trigger is identified, addressing it directly can often bring relief in a short time. For symptom management, analgesic mouthwashes, ointments, or gels may provide temporary relief and promote healing of uncomfortable lesions.

In cases where no specific trigger is determined, topical corticosteroids are commonly effective.

We will guide you in treatment and medication options, along with dietary recommendations and advice on oral hygiene practices. While a permanent cure for oral lichen planus may not always be possible, symptoms can typically be managed and improved, enhancing your quality of life.

Regular monitoring can help control flare-ups before they worsen and also enables us to detect any signs of potential oral cancer in affected areas.
