Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the mucous membranes in your mouth, causing white patches, red swollen areas, or even open sores on the inner cheeks, gums, or tongue. This can lead to sensitivity to spicy or acidic foods, or a persistent burning sensation. Other symptoms include inflamed or bleeding gums, a thickened tongue, and discomfort that may make speaking or eating difficult.
These symptoms can also lead to stress, depression, weight loss and nutrient deficiencies, and may increase the risk of oral cancer.
