Various studies have shown that dental implants are a more effective long-term solution for missing teeth than dentures, which become loose and need to be replaced, but a reliable compromise is to fix dentures firmly in place by anchoring them to implants.
Benefits of implant retained dentures at
The Bristol Dental Practice
Stability and comfort
Removable dentures can replace lost teeth and provide support to the lips and face when underlying bone has been lost. Using dental implants to retain dentures offers extra stability and comfort, and helps to protect the patient’s jawbone, thereby stopping their facial profile from changing in ways that have an ageing effect.
Avoiding tissue damage
With assistance from our skilled denture technicians we construct dentures to complement the patient’s facial features. Typically, dentures rest on the gums and hook around remaining teeth, but unfortunately they normally agitate these neighbouring tissues until eventually more teeth are lost. As the jawbone under the gums loses bulk, and the gum covering the jaw is degraded, so the dentures become more unstable and uncomfortable to wear.

Protecting the jawbone
The gums were not designed to support dentures, but placing implants to support and retain a denture will offer increased stability, improving comfort and helping to protect the jawbone. When teeth are still present, a partial denture may also be an effective way to replace a few missing teeth.
Easy oral hygiene
An advantage of implant retained dentures is that good oral hygiene is easy to maintain. Brushing and flossing around implants is simple once the denture or bridge has been removed. This may be important where access is problematic, for example where there is a lot of bone loss, or when a patient has limited dexterity.
