Airflow® and GBT Hygiene Treatment Journey
Airflow® and GBT therapy is tailored to your individual dental health requirements and therefore one treatment can be very different to the next. However, we’ve provided an overview of the typical treatment journey.
Consultation
If you are a new patient to The Bristol Dental Practice, your initial appointment will be more involved than a routine one. We’ll carry out a new patient examination to get to know you and establish the current health of your teeth and gums. This appointment lasts 60 minutes which is double the time of a routine visit.
The cost of your first 60-minute hygiene appointment can be found here.
Once we have assessed your oral health, we will determine whether Airflow® GBT hygiene treatment is suitable for you. The treatment procedure will be explained to you and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Treatment
The combined Airflow® GBT hygiene treatment begins with the application of a specially formulated powder to the teeth and gums. The dentist uses a handheld device that emits a controlled stream of air, water and powder particles. This high-velocity spray effectively removes stubborn stains, plaque, and tartar deposits without causing damage to the teeth or gums. The procedure is generally very comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it important to have plaque and tartar removed by a hygienist?
Each time you eat, plaque accumulates in sticky biofilm, trapping bacteria. When you eat sugary foods, this bacteria produces acids that attach your teeth, eventually eating through the enamel and leading to tooth decay. Even with the most diligent or oral health routines at home, plaque still builds up over time and can’t be removed independently at home. It’s essential that you visit your hygienist to remove the plaque and prevent inflammation in the gums, which if left untreated can cause gum disease.
How much is Airflow® GBT treatment in Bristol?
The cost of Airflow® GBT treatment can be found here.
How does Airflow® GBT hygiene treatment differ from a standard hygienist appointment?
The GBT protocol dictates that the biofilm in the patient’s mouth is disclosed (stained) to make it clearly visible for both the patient and hygienist. The Airflow® is then used to remove the biofilm using a jet of warm water and fine powder which is more comfortable for the patient than traditional hygiene therapy methods. It’s a minimally invasive and non-abrasive method which means it’s suitable for even those with sensitive teeth.
Patients often report that a standard hygiene treatment is not comparable to the Airflow® GBT method as their teeth feel even smoother after the latter and the effects last for longer.
Is dental Airflow® GBT treatment painful?
No, Airflow® GBT therapy is not painful. Some patients may experience very mild sensitivity, but this is temporary and will quickly reside.
